Hello and welcome to Renova!
This article provides information that may be helpful for those considering self-renovating their roof. It describes DIY procedures using galvanised steel instead of slate, which is lighter, more durable and easier to maintain.
Roof type
There are many different types of roofs, varying from functional to well-designed. Especially for DIY self-renovations, a well-sloped roof with as few surfaces as possible is functionally suitable. This improves the flow of rainwater and reduces the risk of leaks.

Of these, the best functional ones are (1) those with the fewest possible surfaces and (2) those with a firm slope
!
However, it is important to choose a roof that suits the local climate, for example, in areas with heavy snowfall, a design that prevents snow build-up is recommended.
Required elements
① gradient
A well-pitched roof allows rain and snow to flow more easily, reducing damage to the building.
(ii) Gapless design
Gaps in roofing materials can cause leaks, so the design should minimise gaps.
Points to consider.
Roof with eaves
The eaves are the back side of the roof where it protrudes from the roof. Eaves protect the building envelope and prevent rain from bouncing off.
Designed not to be fixed with screws
Screws are more likely to corrode and loosen, so where possible, clips or other easy-to-remove methods should be used for installation.
Galvalume steel is low-maintenance and lightweight, ideal for roofs.
Galvalume steel sheets are lightweight, waterproof, corrosion resistant and easy to maintain. It also has a long service life and is resistant to earthquakes and other shaking.
Points to note
On the other hand, galvanised steel is considered to be susceptible to rain noise, so if this is a concern, it is recommended that soundproofing materials are used in combination. In addition, the flow of rainwater may be impaired if there is no appropriate slope.
Work process and construction procedures
- 1. check the condition of the roof and order the necessary materials
- 2. removal of existing roof and leak check
- Lay 12 mm veneer as a base.
- Apply thermal barrier sheets (five 12 mm thick rods, equally spaced on a 1800 mm wide veneer).
- Install another layer of 12 mm veneer.
- Apply asphalt roofing sheets (can be fixed with corkets or staples).
- Install galvanised steel sheathing along the boundary line.
- install the bars on the roof
- Further asphalt roofing sheets installed.
- Install galvanised steel sheet according to the manufacturer's instructions.
- eaves installation
Let's take a closer look at each of these steps.
1. check the condition of the roof and order the necessary materials
Check the length of the roof eaves and the state of deterioration, identify the materials required and order them. You should also have the necessary DIY tools ready to work with.
2. removal of existing roof and leak check
Remove the existing roofing material and check that the roof foundation is secure. If there are any leaks or damage, it is important that these are repaired in advance.
3. lay veneer on the substrate
Laying veneer stabilises the galvanised steel substrate and improves thermal insulation; a thickness of around 12 mm is recommended.
4. installation of thermal barrier sheets
Thermal insulation sheets are applied over the veneer to improve thermal insulation. This is an effective solution to summer heat.
5. another layer of veneer
To further improve the thermal barrier effect, another layer of veneer is added to strengthen the insulation.
6. asphalt roofing sheet application
Asphalt roofing sheets make the roof more waterproof and last longer. It can be easily fixed with corkets or staples.
7. installation of galvanised steel claddings
Underlay material is positioned where the galvanised steel sheet is to be installed to prevent displacement during installation.
8. install the bars on the roof
Installing rods makes it easier to fix the galvanised steel sheet.
9. installation of asphalt roofing sheets
Further asphalt roofing sheets are applied to provide a double layer of waterproofing.
10. installation of galvanised steel sheet
Carefully install the galvanised steel sheet according to the manufacturer's instructions. Pay attention to the position and spacing of the screws and fix them firmly in place.
11. eaves installation
Eaves are installed by painting or fastening method. If painted, they should be primed with a primer coat of rust inhibitor and sealer, followed by two coats of top coat. If fastened, the eaves should be nailed to the edges of the roof and nailed at the correct pitch.
How to choose materials
Apart from galvanised, there are also zinc-titanium alloys, which can be selected according to design and local climate.
Structure
As for the structure required, they should be:
External materials to protect against rain and wind.
Space to prevent dampness
Structural materials to support the material
heat-insulating material
.
The eaves should be determined separately as required, as there is no point in having too many as the angle of entry in the east and west is from the side rather than the top.

Conclusion
How was the article?
Although it is very useful to see construction procedures in writing to get a bird's eye view, to be honest, I think the understanding is far deeper if you watch a video or see the site in person.
In preparing this article, we have also referred to various videos and other information, so we recommend that you also watch the related videos and other information from the reference information at the end of this article. (You guys are awesome!)
See you then!
